Windows 11 build 26220.7051

The search box on the taskbar has been revamped with new “Ask Copilot” feature to show search results powered by Copilot Vision and Voice, along with its settings under the new Personalization → Taskbar → Ask Copilot page in the Settings app. This feature is gradually rolled out, but can be activated manually by enabling the 57739723 and 57941090 velocity staging keys.

Microsoft has confirmed that version 25H2 ships on top of the same platform release that debuted with version 24H2 last year. That means version 25H2 will be delivered as a smaller enablement package or cumulative style update, and not a full-blown OS upgrade.

The good news is that this style of update for version 25H2 will mean an overall smaller download and install process, which should allow your PC to install the latest release at a much faster pace, almost like a normal monthly security update.

这三条新闻连起来看,Windows(狭义的面向个人的Windows产品,不是广义的Windows平台)已经进入了进退两难的绝境了。

Windows

It’s clear that Windows’ reputation is at an all time low right now, and Microsoft’s insistence on pushing towards an AI-powered future is not helping things. Many customers want Windows to be a platform that gets out of the way, but the last few years have seen Windows become enshittified in unapologetic ways.

But these days, with everything from a Microsoft Account being forced on everyone, to the OS continually trying to push you to use OneDrive and Copilot, people feel like Microsoft is now using Windows as an avenue to squeeze as much money from the user as possible. You have to remember, Windows isn’t free, and so none of this is acceptable in the eyes of many.

…………

Indeed, people feel like AI is not the answer to Windows’ current problems. Microsoft should be focused on getting the basics right before it tries to implement AI features and capabilities throughout the OS.

The last few years have seen Microsoft go AI crazy, to the point where it’s cutting budgets across the company in an effort to fund more AI projects and infrastructure. Xbox has seen massive cuts, as has Surface. Everything Microsoft makes feels worse right now because the company is too busy chasing the AI bubble. To Microsoft, if it’s not AI, it’s not important.

Unfortunately, based on how Microsoft has treated its customers and products over the last decade, the company is now facing an uphill battle when it comes to onboarding people into its own AI ecosystem. It seems not many people want to use Copilot, or OneDrive, or a Microsoft account, after the company has repeatedly let its customers down by cancelling products and features.

Had Microsoft done a better job at appealing to consumers and looking after them in the last decade, perhaps the company wouldn’t need to result to dirty tactics and hostile user experience design to force people into using their services. Maybe people would want to link a Microsoft account to Windows 11 and use OneDrive.

Unfortunately for Microsoft, that’s not the case, and at this point it’s unlikely to ever be the case unless the company makes some serious changes now. It has to pull back on the entification of Windows, and it has to ease off the AI pedal and first focus on getting Windows back into a good state first.

This ‘upgrade’ ships as the WhatsApp native experience rolls out on Apple Watch, which has 115 million consumers, while Windows has over one billion active monthly devices. Clearly, numbers are not always enough, and I am not sure if I can really blame Meta when Microsoft also does not make native apps for Windows anymore.

User Interface: Starting, Launching, and Switching | Microsoft Learn

Figures 4 and 5 help us understand how customers customize their taskbars. We could probably spend an entire post focused solely on how we determine the options we expose. Perhaps another time we’ll tackle the paradox of choice and how options stress our engineering process yet also make the product more fun for a set of customers. Until then, let’s see what conclusions we can draw from these findings. The most obvious takeaway is that most customers do not change the default settings, which are a simple right-click Properties away. For example, it may be interesting to note how often end-users relocate the taskbar to other regions of the screen—less than 2% of sessions have a taskbar that’s not at the bottom of the screen. We also know that some small percentage of machines accidently relocate the taskbar and more often than not end-users have difficulty undoing such a state—though our data does not differentiate this situation. This data does not necessarily mean we would remove relocation functionality, but rather we could prioritize investments in a default horizontal taskbar over other configurations.
